The
staff of the Georgia World Congress Center,
the Georgia Dome and Centennial Olympic Park
are working hard to help friends and family
affected by the devastation left by Hurricane
Katrina. The donation of over 100,000 bottles
of water to the affected area and a collection
for more than 100 evacuees residing with GWCCA
staff are just the start of the assistance being
provided by the city's convention center.
MGR food services, the exclusive food service
provider for the Georgia World Congress Center
Authority coordinated with Shepard Exposition
Service to transport 66 pallets -- that's 114,048
bottles of water -- directly to New Orleans
in the days immediately following the disaster.
Many GWCCA staff members have opened their homes
to friends and family members who had to relocate
from Louisiana and Mississippi. The GWCCA's
Special Events Committee and Human Resources
department quickly organized to find out the
needs of these families whose households may
have doubled over night. Lists were compiled
and distributed campus-wide of the specific
needs of these families. These included clothing
for an estimated 100 men, women and children,
school supplies, toiletries, bedding and linens,
kitchen accessories and non-perishable foods.
Then employees volunteered to help sort and
organize the items. The families were welcomed
to campus on September 15 and 16 to receive
the items that they need.
On
Tuesday, September 27 the Georgia World Congress
Center will open its doors again for Neighbors
Helping Neighbors Find Jobs Now, a job fair
to benefit evacuees of Hurricane Katrina organized
by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, United
Way and several other city, state, business
and faith-based groups. An estimated 500 companies
will be exhibiting to help find employment for
some of the estimated 100,000 people in the
Metro Atlanta area who have relocated from the
affected areas. Please help spread the word
to those in need as well as companies who may
be interested in participating. There is no
charge for employers to participate, but a contribution
to a special United Way Fund is encouraged.
