ATLANTA (August 29, 2006) - This month the very first elements of the Downtown and Midtown Wayfinding System signs were installed. This initiative, spearheaded by Central Atlanta Progress, will standardize signage that is currently inconsistent and confusing. Despite an investment in directional signage prior to the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, there are currently many layers of signs that have been installed by numerous independent governmental and private initiatives.
The new signage system will include uniform, attractive, geographically oriented maps, signs and kiosks. Where possible, the 1996 Olympic signage program will be incorporated into the new system. Graphic elements on the signs will give directional information for different modes of transportation including private autos, commercial vehicles, bus and rail transit, pedestrians, Segways and bicycles. For convention and tradeshow attendees maneuvering downtown, the new wayfinding signs will prove very helpful.
The signs installed so far include three vehicular directional signs along Peachtree Street near Woodruff Park and Peachtree Center and one along International Boulevard near Centennial Olympic Park. These signs are a work in progress and just the beginning of a projected three-month long installation process of 252 vehicular, pedestrian and map kiosk signs throughout Midtown and Downtown Atlanta.
