Georgia World Congress Center Celebrates Grand Opening of Expansion with a Night to Remember

ATLANTA (February 24, 2003) - The Georgia World Congress Center celebrated the completion of its 1.4 million square-foot expansion on Friday, Feb. 21 with a number of surprises, making it a night to remember for all guests.

The Georgia World Congress Center Phase IV Grand Opening Celebration began at 6:30 p.m. with a reception in the new Building C entrance. Brightly colored atrium aerialists showcased the vast physical presence of the new grand concourse as guests enjoyed the spectacular performances..

GWCCA Executive Director Dan Graveline welcomed the guests, who included national and international convention and trade show customers, the Atlanta hospitality community, city leaders and state legislators. Chairman of the Board Bill Archer and Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue spoke about the importance of the Georgia World Congress Center's expansion and its impact on the quality of life for Georgians and significance to trade show organizers.

After Governor Perdue's remarks, the world-renowned Morehouse marching band made its dramatic entrance and proceeded to lead the crowd from the grand entrance to the new Georgia Ballroom. The grand ballroom had been converted into a colorful carnival complete with games and prizes. Guests were treated to a choreographed evening featuring more inspiring choreographed performances and dancing to live music performed by the Atlanta Beat.

What better way to conclude an evening of surprises than a fireworks display set to music from the balcony overlooking the new West Plaza? The grand finale ended with a bang as guests enjoyed Ray Charles' hit song, "Georgia on my Mind," as the fireworks lit up the sky against the backdrop of the new West Plaza and the Georgia Dome.
