Our Sustainability
Timeline

2005

GWCC establishes recycling program in wake of being chosen to host the U.S. Green Building Council’s Green build International Conference and Expo.

2009

GWCC establishes composting program through Levy Restaurants following the downtown Atlanta convention district’s designation as a Zero Waste Zone by the Green Foodservice Alliance, which aimed to reduce waste sent to landfill through recycling, composting, and reuse of materials.

Boxlunch donations partnered with Second Helpings Atlanta

2010

GWCC hires the industry’s first dedicated sustainability staff member at a sports and convention center complex.

2014

Georgia World Congress Center, at 3.9 million square feet, becomes the largest LEED Silver certified convention center in the world.

2017

Georgia World Congress Center recertifies at LEED Gold, becoming the largest LEED Gold certified convention center in the world.

2018

Atlanta hosts the College Football Playoff for the first time and employs a sustainability committee and green team, led by GWCCA, to leave a positive legacy on the city.

2019

Atlanta plays host to Super Bowl LVIII and again develops a community stake holder group to support the sustainability efforts of all Super Bowl related activities. Atlanta again hosts the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo which achieved the Events Industry Council’s Platinum certification for Sustainable Event Standards.

2022

Georgia World Congress Center recertifies as a LEED Gold Certified convention center.

2026

GWCC welcomes Hannah Greenfader, Sustainability Manager, and launches the Green Team: a staff-led initiative dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts across Georgia World Congress Center.
